Construction Details

Below are the details of our portable Storage Shed Package, featuring only the finest quality materials sourced from Old Hickory Buildings of Canada.

Storage Shed Framing:  Engineered 2×4 studs are spaced every 16″ on centre.  We double the wall studs wherever our siding has a seam so that both sections of siding will have a full stud width to be fastened to.  Exterior walls are sheeted with Premium LP Smart Panel Siding, then painted with high quality paint designed especially for the outdoor shed industry.
Storage Shed Roofing:  Trusses are spaced ever 24″.  The roof  is then sheeted with OSB roof sheeting and then sheeted with 30-year 29 gauge high quality metal roofing or residential grade architectural shingles.

Storage Shed Flooring:  4×6 pressure through treated skids that are notched at 16″ on centre to ensure consistent floor joist spacing. Recessing and toenailing the joists in the notches lock them in place ensuring the shed can be loaded, unloaded, and moved repeatedly without any warping of the floor system.

We use  2×4 pressure treated floor joists {2×6 on 14′ wide and over}.  The floor is then sheeted with 5/8″ {may upgrade to 3/4″} tongue and groove, engineered panels, which provide exceptional strength and stiffness for a flatter, more stable floor.  Advanced resins are moisture resistant.

Storage Sheds FAQ'S

What is a Storage Shed?

What is a Storage Shed?

A shed used for storage is a small, usually freestanding structure designed to store products and organize various items, tools, equipment, or belongings. Typically made of wood, metal, or plastic, storage type sheds are commonly found in residential properties and provide additional room to store items that may not fit inside the main living area or garage. They are often used to store gardening tools, outdoor furniture, bicycles, seasonal decorations, and other household or outdoor items, helping to keep the property tidy and organized.

What are some Examples of Storage Sheds?

What are some examples of these Sheds?

There are various types and designs of storage type sheds available to suit different needs and preferences. Some examples of storage type sheds include:

  1. Traditional Wooden Shed or Storage Shop: A classic storage shed made of wood, usually with a pitched roof and a single or double door. It blends well with outdoor environments and offers a rustic charm.
  2. Metal Storage Shed: Constructed from galvanized steel or aluminum, metal sheds provide durable and weather-resistant storage options. They are often low-maintenance and offer good security for stored items.
  3. Plastic Resin Shed: Made from high-quality plastic resin, these sheds are lightweight, easy to assemble, and resistant to rot, decay, and pests.
  4. Garden Sheds: Specifically designed for gardening tools and equipment, these sheds often have built-in shelves or racks to organize various gardening items.  Also great for patio furniture, garden tools, lawn mowers,
  5. Tool Shed: Similar to a garden-style shed these outdoor sheds are specifically designed to store various tools like lawnmowers, shovels, rakes, and other equipment.
  6. Bike Shed: A compact shed designed to store bicycles securely and protect them from the elements.
  7. Potting Shed: A shed equipped with a workbench and storage for gardening supplies, perfect for potting plants and starting seedlings.
  8. Vertical Storage Shed: Tall and narrow, these sheds are designed to save space and offer storage for long-handled tools and other items.
  9. Horizontal Outdoor Storage Shed: Wider and lower, these sheds are ideal for storing items like trash bins or firewood.
  10. Custom-Built Shed: Some people choose to build custom sheds to meet their specific needs and aesthetics, allowing for personalized features and sizes.

These are just a few examples of the diverse range of storage type sheds available, catering to various storage requirements and preferences.

What is the most Durable Type of Shed?

What is the most Durable Type of Shed?

The most durable type of shed is typically one made of metal, such as steel or aluminum. Metal sheds are known for their strength, longevity, and are weather resistant to conditions like rain, snow, and strong winds. They are also less susceptible to issues like rot, insect infestations, and warping, which can affect wooden sheds over time.

However, it is essential to note that the durability of a shed also depends on factors like the quality of materials used, construction techniques, and proper maintenance. Even the most durable type of shed can have a shorter lifespan if not built and maintained correctly.

It’s also important to consider other factors like aesthetics, insulation, and price when choosing a shed material. For example, wooden sheds can offer a more natural and visually appealing look, and they can be easier to insulate compared to metal sheds. On the other hand, plastic sheds, such as those made from resin or vinyl, can offer a balance between durability, low maintenance, and affordability, although they may not be as strong as metal sheds.

In summary, while metal sheds are generally the most durable and weather resistant, it’s essential to consider various factors and personal preferences when selecting the best type of shed for your specific needs.

Are there Rules about Backyard Sheds?

Are there Rules about Backyard Sheds?

In Alberta, Canada, there are rules and regulations regarding the construction and placement of backyard sheds. These rules can vary between municipalities, as each has its own specific bylaws and building codes governing sheds and other accessory structures. It is essential to consult your local municipal office or planning department for the most accurate and up-to-date information relevant to your area.

Some general guidelines that may apply to backyard sheds in Alberta include:

  1. Permits: Depending on the shed size and location, you may need a building permit before construction. Generally, smaller sheds under a specific size (e.g., 10 square meters or 108 square feet) may not require a permit, but it’s important to check with your local municipality.
  2. Setbacks: There are usually setback requirements dictating how far a shed must be from property lines, other buildings, and specific features like utility lines or water bodies. These setbacks can vary depending on your specific location and zoning.
  3. Height restrictions: There may be height restrictions for accessory structures, including sheds, to ensure they do not obstruct neighbors’ views or cause privacy concerns.
  4. Foundation and anchoring: Depending on the size and type of shed, there may be rules regarding the type of foundation required and how the shed needs to be anchored to withstand wind loads and other weather conditions.
  5. Building codes: Your shed must adhere to local building codes, which typically outline the materials and construction methods required to ensure the structure is safe and structurally sound.
  6. Easements and right-of-way: Ensure your shed does not encroach on any easements or rights-of-way on your property, as this can lead to legal issues and potential removal of the structure.

Remember that these are general guidelines, and specific rules can vary between municipalities in Alberta. Always consult with your local planning department or municipal office before constructing a backyard shed to ensure you comply with all relevant regulations.

In Calgary – Accessory buildings have certain by-laws that are based on the size of the structure.  If the structure is under 10 square metres in size and is not sitting in a right-of-way there are no by-laws.

If the structure is over 10 square metres in size then there are a few by-laws.

  1. Must be a least 1 meter in distance from the main dwelling or garage.
  2. Must be 0.60m from the side and rear property lines. In other words, you cannot place accessory buildings that are over 10 sqm on your property lines.
  3. Must have maintenance-free siding. If the siding on the accessory building is maintenance-free, then it can be placed up to the side property line, but not the rear property line. 0.60m is still the required distance to the rear property line.

Does a Storage Shed need a Slab?

Does a Storage Shed need a Slab?

A backyard shed does not always need a concrete slab as its foundation, but it depends on the size, purpose, and local regulations in your area.  Small garden sheds for example may just need a flat area where it can be placed.  Some people also put their garden shed on gravel or pavers.

If your shed is intended to have heavier outdoor storage you may want to consider a more sturdy foundation, as storage-type sheds sometimes need that.  You want your outdoor storage to be as low maintenance as possible and keep your shed looking great for a long time.

Whether a storage shed needs a concrete slab depends on several factors, including the size of the shed, the weight of the items stored inside, the local building codes, and the intended use of the shed. Here are some considerations to help you decide:

  1. Size and Weight: Smaller sheds used for lightweight items like gardening tools and outdoor toys may not necessarily require a concrete slab. However, larger sheds or those intended to store heavier equipment or machinery may benefit from the stability and level surface that a concrete slab provides.
  2. Durability and Longevity: A concrete slab can enhance the durability and longevity of a storage shed. It creates a solid and moisture-resistant foundation, reducing the risk of the shed’s base rotting or getting damaged over time.
  3. Stability and Security: A concrete slab provides a stable base for the shed, reducing the risk of shifting or leaning. This stability enhances the security of the shed and its contents.
  4. Local Building Codes: Check with your local building codes and regulations to determine if a concrete slab is required for sheds of a certain size or in specific areas.
  5. Budget and Convenience: Building a concrete slab can add to the cost and construction time of the shed. If you’re on a budget or looking for a quicker installation, you might opt for other foundation options like gravel or pressure-treated wood beams.
  6. Permanence: Once a concrete slab is poured, it becomes a permanent feature of your property. If you anticipate moving the shed in the future, a non-permanent foundation may be more suitable.

In summary, while a concrete slab can provide several benefits for a storage shed, it may not be a strict requirement for all situations. Consider the factors mentioned above, assess your specific needs, and choose the foundation type that best fits your shed and budget requirements.
