Construction Details

Below are the details of our portable Single Slope Shed Package, featuring only the finest quality materials sourced from Old Hickory Buildings of Canada.

Single Slope Shed Framing:  Engineered 2×4 studs are spaced every 16″ on centre.  We double the wall studs wherever our siding has a seam so that both sections of siding will have a full stud width to be fastened to.  Exterior walls are sheeted with Premium LP Smart Panel Siding, then painted with high quality paint designed especially for the outdoor shed industry.
Single Slope Shed Roofing:  Trusses are spaced ever 24″.  The roof  is then sheeted with OSB roof sheeting and then sheeted with 30-year 29 gauge high quality metal roofing or residential grade architectural shingles.

Single Slope Shed Flooring:  4×6 pressure through treated skids that are notched at 16″ on centre to ensure consistent floor joist spacing. Recessing and toenailing the joists in the notches lock them in place ensuring the shed can be loaded, unloaded, and moved repeatedly without any warping of the floor system.

We use  2×4 pressure treated floor joists {2×6 on 14′ wide and over}.  The floor is then sheeted with 5/8″ {may upgrade to 3/4″} tongue and groove, engineered panels, which provide exceptional strength and stiffness for a flatter, more stable floor.  Advanced resins are moisture resistant.

Are there Rules about Backyard Sheds?

Are there Rules about Backyard Sheds?

In Alberta, Canada, there are rules and regulations regarding the construction and placement of backyard sheds. These rules can vary between municipalities, as each has its own specific bylaws and building codes governing sheds and other accessory structures. It is essential to consult your local municipal office or planning department for the most accurate and up-to-date information relevant to your area.

Some general guidelines that may apply to backyard sheds in Alberta include:

  1. Permits: Depending on the shed size and location, you may need a building permit before construction. Generally, smaller sheds under a specific size (e.g., 10 square meters or 108 square feet) may not require a permit, but it’s important to check with your local municipality.
  2. Setbacks: There are usually setback requirements dictating how far a shed must be from property lines, other buildings, and specific features like utility lines or water bodies. These setbacks can vary depending on your specific location and zoning.
  3. Height restrictions: There may be height restrictions for accessory structures, including sheds, to ensure they do not obstruct neighbors’ views or cause privacy concerns.
  4. Foundation and anchoring: Depending on the size and type of shed, there may be rules regarding the type of foundation required and how the shed needs to be anchored to withstand wind loads and other weather conditions.
  5. Building codes: Your shed must adhere to local building codes, which typically outline the materials and construction methods required to ensure the structure is safe and structurally sound.
  6. Easements and right-of-way: Ensure your shed does not encroach on any easements or rights-of-way on your property, as this can lead to legal issues and potential removal of the structure.

Remember that these are general guidelines, and specific rules can vary between municipalities in Alberta. Always consult with your local planning department or municipal office before constructing a backyard shed to ensure you comply with all relevant regulations.

In Calgary – Accessory buildings have certain by-laws that are based on the size of the structure.  If the structure is under 10 square metres in size and is not sitting in a right-of-way there are no by-laws.

If the structure is over 10 square metres in size then there are a few by-laws.

  1. Must be a least 1 meter in distance from the main dwelling or garage.
  2. Must be 0.60m from the side and rear property lines. In other words, you cannot place accessory buildings that are over 10 sqm on your property lines.
  3. Must have maintenance-free siding. If the siding on the accessory building is maintenance-free, then it can be placed up to the side property line, but not the rear property line. 0.60m is still the required distance to the rear property line.

Does a Single Slope Shed Need a Slab?

Does a Single Slope Shed Need a Slab?

A backyard single slope shed does not always need a concrete slab as its foundation, but it depends on the size, purpose, and local regulations in your area.  A small garden shed for example may just need a flat area where it can be placed.  Some people also put their garden shed on gravel or pavers.

If your shed is intended to have heavier outdoor storage you may want to consider a more sturdy foundation, as storage sheds sometimes need that.  You want your outdoor storage to be as low maintenance as possible and keep your storage shed looking great for a long time.

There are various types of foundations you can choose from when building a shed, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages:

  1. Concrete slab: A concrete slab provides a solid, level surface for your shed and is suitable for heavy sheds or those used as workshops with heavy equipment. However, it requires more effort, time, and cost to install compared to other foundation types.
  2. Gravel pad: A gravel pad is a simple, affordable foundation option that provides good drainage and a level surface for your shed. It’s suitable for smaller to medium-sized sheds and those that don’t need to support heavy loads.
  3. Concrete blocks or piers: This foundation type consists of concrete blocks or piers placed at the corners and along the perimeter of the shed, with wooden skids or beams on top to support the shed floor. It’s a relatively easy and affordable option, suitable for sheds that don’t need to support heavy loads or for sheds built on sloped or uneven ground.
  4. Wood skids: Wood skids are pressure-treated wooden beams placed directly on the ground, upon which the shed floor is built. This option is suitable for smaller, lighter sheds and is relatively simple and affordable to construct. However, it may not provide the same level of stability and durability as other foundation types.
  5. Screw piles: Screw piles are metal piles that are screwed into the ground and provide a solid anchor for your shed. This option is relatively easy to install, and it’s suitable for sheds that require a more robust foundation but without the need for a full concrete slab.

When deciding whether or not your backyard shed needs a concrete slab, consider factors such as the shed’s size, weight, intended use, local building codes and regulations, and the ground conditions at the site. If you’re unsure about the best foundation type for your shed, consult with a local contractor or building professional to help determine the most appropriate option for your situation.

What are the Benefits of a Single Slope Shed?

  1. Storage Space: One of the primary purposes of storage sheds is to provide extra backyard storage space. Outdoor sheds provide the ability to store items that are not frequently used, such as gardening tools, outdoor equipment, seasonal decorations, bicycles, or even household items. By adding outdoor storage and keeping these items in a shed, you can free up space in your home or garage, helping to maintain a more organized living environment.
  2. Organization and Accessibility: Utility sheds or a storage shed can offer a designated space for storing and organizing various belongings. With shelves, hooks, and storage systems, you can keep items neatly arranged, making them easily accessible when needed. This helps reduce clutter in your living areas and simplifies the process of finding and retrieving items. It can also free up more storage space in your garage.
  3. Protection and Security: A well-built utility shed provides protection from the elements, keeping your belongings safe and sheltered. It shields items from rain, snow, sunlight, and other weather conditions that could cause damage or deterioration. Additionally, sheds with secure locks and sturdy construction enhance security, preventing unauthorized access to valuable items.
  4. Outdoor Equipment Maintenance: Utility sheds offer a convenient location for storing and maintaining outdoor equipment. When leisure season is over, you can store lawn mowers, trimmers, and garden supplies can be stored in the shed, keeping them protected and extending their lifespan. Proper storage also reduces the risk of accidents by keeping potentially hazardous equipment out of reach from children or pets.
  5. Flexibility and Versatility: Utility sheds are versatile spaces that can be customized to suit your specific needs. They can be transformed into workshops, hobby areas, or even small home offices equipped with windows. This flexibility allows you to utilize the shed for various purposes beyond storage, providing additional functional space on your property.
  6. Property Value: Well-maintained utility sheds and outdoor structures can enhance the value of your property. A well-designed and properly constructed shed adds functional appeal to potential buyers, as it offers additional storage options and organizational benefits. It can be seen as an attractive asset that sets your property apart. Sheds complete that backyard project and allow easy access to store products in a convenient place.
